Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God ? this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God?s will is ? his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.
-Romans 12:1-3
ok, i’m not going to go into one of my “what’s the therefore there for?” lectures. with that out of the way, what on earth am i going to talk about? the answer comes in three sections.
the first of which is the body itself. what’s interesting to me is how something so physical is such a spiritual act. i know there’s the whole it’s your body, including heart, mind, soul, blah blah blah. but i think there’s also a hint of keeping your body in good shape.
secondly, is conforming. i know of people that use this verse to defend how “different” they are from people. but it’s more of a “don’t conform the ongoing sinfulness that is the world” kind of non-conforming. not counter culture reforming.
thirdly, the issue of pride and self condemnation. the pride issue is fairly easy to see. but the self condemnation, which i am horribly good at, is the more subtle part. there is a difference between conviction and condemnation. conviction is something that we learn, and are given some of, from God. condemnation is more like a lie that the enemy puts out to help divide us from God. it’s that i’m not worthy syndrome. the over reaction to even the little things. sober judgment is what is called for, sober. always in the right mind, and always in faith.
